The interior of Florence Baptistery

- the mosaics and the statue

Baptistery: Interior

Mosaics, monumental tomb and statue

The interior of the Baptistery is adorned with splendid medieval mosaics covering the vault. The colors are magnificent and the figures are truly expressive.

The dominant figure is a huge Christ in His glory, perhaps the work of the 13th century painter Coppo di Marcovaldo, who worked here alongside Cimabue and other Florentine artists, all predecessors to Giotto.
You can also see the tomb of the anti-Pope John XXIII, Cardinal Baldassare Coscia, who died in 1419. This is the work of Donatello and Michelozzo.
There is, in addition, a charming wooden statue of Mary Magdalen, also the work of Donatello.
