The church of Santa Felìcita is one of the oldest in Florence, but it has been reconstructed and refurbished many times over the centuries. Today its façade forms part of Vasari's Corridor linking Palazzo Vecchio up with Palazzo Pitti.
The interior is splendid because of its architecture and you will see how the architectonic and decorative elements, made in grey sandstone, stand out against the plain white plaster background. This interior was refurbished during the 1830s by Ferdinando Rugggieri.
If you look back at the interior of the façade, you will see some large rooms closed off by grating. These were constructed to allow the Grand Duke and his family to attend religious functions without being seem.
Immediately on the right, as you face the altar, you will see the Capponi Chapel which contains the most important art works in this church. There are some beautiful color effects, harmony of composition and a strong feeling of the tragic conveyed in the Deposition of Christ from the Cross.
This Mannerist masterpiece was painted by Jacopo Carucci, who was usually simply called "Pontormo". He also painted the Annunciation on the right wall. These works are dated between 1526 and 1528.
