This bridge is a magnificent example of late Renaissance architecture and it was designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati between 1557 and 1562. It is an extremely elegant structure, with outstanding contrasts between the stone itself and the marble decoration.
The bridge was destroyed by the retreating German troops on August 4, 1944, but was reconstructed to the original design with much love and care in the 1950s, and using the original materials which were recovered from the river.
