This is among the oldest churches in Florence and it was reconstructed in the Gothic style in the second half of the 13th century. Note the marble statue of the Madonna and Child, a beautiful Gothic work at the main entrance.
The interior is harmoniously designed with rows of columns supporting pointed arches.
Inside the chapel to the left of the main altar, there is a 13th century panel, part painting, part sculpture, of the Madonna and Child. In the same chapel, a column can still be seen on the right –it is all that remains of the tomb of Brunetto Latini, the famous 13th century literary figure who was Dante's teacher.
As you turn back to the main door, you will see the imaginatively conceived and elaborately decorated interior of the façade resulting from the end of the 16th century.
