This cloister of the Confraternity of St John the Baptist is known as the cloister "dello scalzo", or "barefooted person", called so because the cross bearer walked barefoot during processions.
The chiaroscuro frescoes were painted between 1514 and 1526 by Andrea del Sarto and, with their pleasing composition and sculptural effects, they are a splendid example of Mannerist painting.
