This museum is housed in the monastery in a wonderful series of 15th century rooms, the work of Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, the favorite architect of Cosimo de'Medici il Vecchio.
The collection is well and truly a shrine to Fra Angelo because he painted the frescoes in many of the cells while he was living here. Further works of his, from other churches and religious institutes around Florence, were collected and brought here. One of the most precious is the monumental, the very moving Crucifixion, found inside the Chapter Room.
In addition to the frescoed cells on the first floor, you can also visit the Prior's Room where Savonarola lived. Of very great historical and architectonic interest is the Biblioteca, the Library, found in a large room that is divided into three naves. This room, along with Palazzo Medici, is considered one of Michelozzo's masterpieces. Savonarola was arrested herein 1498.
