The so-called New Sacristy is in reality the burial chamber of Lorenzo de' Medici, better known as the Magnificent, of his brother Giuliano, as well as Lorenzo's son Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, and of his grandson Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino.

The building was designed by Michelangelo and he supervised construction between 1521 and 1534. He then left Florence for good and his work was not finally finished until around the middle of the century. Truly this is a magnificent architectural and sculptural work, showing great force in the way the individual elements are united into a whole. It is also important because of its structural innovations.
Two tombs occupy prominent positions, that of Giuliano of Nemours with its statues of Day and Night, and that of Lorenzo of Urbino with Dusk and Dawn. Giuliano's portrait statue expresses action, while Lorenzo is shown in meditation.
These four aspects of Time and the two qualities of Man find here a perfect union, their fulfilment in God.
The tombs of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano were never finished. Michelangelo's Mother and Child was intended for this work.
In Piazza San Lorenzo, close to the church, you will find the entrance to the Laurentian Library which is housed in a building designed by Michelangelo between 1524 and 1534. The vestibule is very beautiful and its chief characteristic is the wonderful stairway, a very powerful and original architectural creation.
