This tomb was desired by Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano, to honor their father Piero and their uncle Giovanni.
It was designed and completed in 1472 by Andrea del Verrocchio, and in this work the artist shows a wonderful ability to unite delicate naturalistic ornamentation in bronze with the marble and porphyry structure of the tomb itself. Notice the exotic finishing touches, the very elegant lion's paws and the realistically conceived tortoises, which give support to the whole tomb.
The ample bronze tracery not only divides the arch which so perfectly frames the tomb, it also serves to filter and to calibrate the light.
