This building was purchased by Michelangelo for his nephew, Leonardo. It was reconstructed by his grand-nephew, Michelangelo Buonarroti il Giovane, at the beginning of the 17th century to become a shrine to his great predecessor.
The house was donated to the City of Florence in 1858 by the artist's last descendant Cosimo Buonarroti.
The museum here is not dedicated to Michelangelo alone, but also to the possessions collected by the family, and especially by the generous Michelangelo il Giovane. Among the works of Michelangelo the artist you will see the marble bas-relief he made when young of the Battle of the Centaurs, the marble relief known as the Madonna of the Stairs, and the wooden model for the façade of the basilica of San Lorenzo.
Michelangelo il Giovane had many rooms constructed, but the one called "Gloria di Michelangelo", which was decorated by the best Florentine artists of the early 17th century, is truly splendid.
You should also see the small chapel with its elegant dome, frescoes by Jacopo Vignali, and the rare, magnificent wood inlay work for the altar, made to the design by Pietro da Cortona.
