The vivacious polychrome marble sets Donatello's work apart and you can see the wild, joyous dance of the cherubs in praise of God. The work was sculpted between 1433 and 1439.
On the other hand, the choir of Luca della Robbia is in a more classical style, with its panels framed in a series of Corinthian pilasters. This work was completed almost contemporaneously with Donatello's, between 1431 and 1438, and it also shows a group of youngsters singing, dancing and making music, in accord with the command of Psalm 150.
Both works were removed from the Cathedral in 1686 on the occasion of the wedding between the Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici and Violante of Bavaria.
