The entrance to this chapel is from Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini. The massive structure, which is the sumptuous mausoleum of the Medici rulers, was erected between 1604 and 1643 by Matteo Nigetti who reworked the original idea of Don Giovanni de' Medici, the half-brother of the Grand Duke Ferdinand I.
On the floor where you go in, you can see the individual vaults and simple tombstones of the Grand Dukes and their families. Go up the stairs and you will come to the grand center of this holy building, a truly splendid chapel with a profusion of marble, bronze and stone works which make up six enormous sarcophaguses.
The two bronze statues here portray the Grand Dukes Ferdinand I and Cosimo II.
The frescoes on the dome are worth admiring. They were finished in 1828 by the neo-classical painter from Arezzo, Pietro Benvenuti.
It is interesting to note that this chapel was originally designed to provide a magnificent resting place for the Holy Sepulcher, which Ferdinand I was trying to acquire from the Turkish Pasha of Jerusalem.
