This church with its single nave goes back to the second half of the 13th century, but it was seriously damaged in 1771 by a fire which broke out during renovation work to the choir and ceiling.
Giuseppe Ruggieri reconstructed the church in the Baroque style that you see today. Although the interior is impressive because of its clear lines, and although you should visit the Corsini Chapel with its lavish marmoreal altar palls and frescoed ceiling done by Luca Giordano in 1682, the church is important because of the pictures that adorn the Brancacci chapel, the one opposite the Corsini Chapel.
